Seattle Orcas are mourning the passing of founding co-owner S. Somasegar, whose contributions to cricket in the Pacific Northwest and the broader technology and business communities left a lasting impact and legacy.

Somasegar, widely known as “Soma,” played an important role in supporting the growth of cricket in the United States through his involvement with the Seattle Orcas. His vision, leadership, and commitment helped shape the foundation of the franchise and its connection to the broader community. He was a champion for building cricket infrastructure in the PNW to grow the game and worked tirelessly to bring a world-class cricket community park to King County.

Beyond his role with the Seattle Orcas, Soma was recognized for his mentorship, generosity, and belief in creating opportunities for others. Those who worked alongside him knew that he was so much more than his professional accomplishments. He was known for his thought leadership, the relationships he built over decades, and the encouragement he extended to people throughout his life and career.

“Soma was a friend for nearly four decades, from our earliest days partnering on the India Development Center and building the developer platform at Microsoft to standing together as co-owners of the Seattle Orcas,” said Seattle Orcas Co-Owner, Sanjay Parthasarathy. “He brought the same quiet commitment and generosity to cricket that he brought to everything else — and to everyone he ever encountered. Malini and I are heartbroken. Our love and prayers are with Akila, their daughters, his mother, and his brother.”

Seattle Orcas' Chief Product Officer, Jagan Nemani, reflected on Soma’s personal impact and mentorship.

“Soma shaped many careers, including mine,” Nemani said. “I still remember meeting him for the first time. Within the very first hour, I felt a genuine connection and knew I wanted to work with him someday. I was fortunate for that opportunity through the Seattle Orcas.

“Over the years, I got to know Soma not just professionally, but personally as well. He believed in people, gave opportunities, and trusted others to do meaningful things. He had a lasting impact on many lives, and I am one of them.

“I will always be grateful for the faith he showed in me and for the chance to learn from him."

"Soma's wisdom and steady leadership were pivotal to the early success of the Seattle Orcas, and we will work in the coming years to honor his legacy. He was passionate about growing the love of the sport and was instrumental in making the Seattle Orcas a true family. He will be dearly missed," said Jessica Ivey, Director of Marketing for the Seattle Orcas.

The Seattle Orcas extend their deepest condolences to Soma’s family, friends and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy will continue to be felt across the cricket community and within the organization he helped establish.
