The Seattle Orcas opened their MLC 2025 campaign with a tough loss, falling to defending champions Washington Freedom in the season opener at Oakland Coliseum.

Captain Heinrich Klaasen won the toss and chose to bat first. Openers David Warner and Kyle Mayers made the most of the opportunity, attacking the Washington bowlers during a blistering powerplay that yielded 66 runs. Warner smashed 31 off 17 balls, while Mayers added a quick 27 off 17.

However, once the opening partnership was broken, the momentum shifted. Wickets fell steadily as Freedom’s bowlers tightened their control. Despite a middle-order collapse, the Seattle Orcas managed to post a total of 145 for 9 in their 20 overs, setting a target of 146.

During the chase, Washington quickly took control, reaching 90 for 1 by the end of the powerplay and staying ahead throughout. The Seattle Orcas’ bowlers fought hard, with Cameron Gannon, Obed McCoy, and Harmeet Singh each taking a wicket. Waqar Salamkheil added two more, giving Seattle a brief glimmer of hope.

Despite the late fightback, Washington comfortably chased down the target, handing the Seattle Orcas a loss in their season debut.

The Seattle Orcas will look to bounce back quickly, with their next matchup against the Texas Super Kings coming up on Monday, June 16 at 6 PM PDT.
